10 Types of Kisses and What They Mean When Dating

Filed under: Kissing — Larry James @ 6:00 am

The kiss can be a mysterious thing; one in need of interpretation, at times. This is especially true when you first start dating someone. There are many different types of kisses, and trying to determine what the other person is attempting to communicate, through the type of kiss they share with you, can be confusing at times. Perhaps these tips will help.

SeniorCoupleKissingPeck on the Cheek – This is the polite kiss. It can mean several different things, depending on the person and how long two people have been dating. On a first date, it may be a means of testing the waters without seeming too aggressive. If you are wanting a kiss on the lips, you may need to initiate it.

Quick Kiss – A quick kiss on the lips, during a new dating relationship, usually means ‘I like you’ or ‘I had fun’. This is especially true of someone who is less verbal about their feelings.

Open-eyed Kiss – If you realize that the other person is not closing their eyes when you kiss them, this means that they are a spectator rather than a participant. Don’t bother.

Closed-eyes Kiss – This is a receptive kiss. When you close your eyes, your sense of touch is heightened so that you can experience the pleasure of the kiss more fully.

Uninvolved Kiss – Does it seem like the other person is less involved in the kissing than you are? This may be a sign that they are preoccupied with other things. This kiss isn’t going anywhere.

Full-mouth Kiss – Their eyes are closed and the kiss is lingering. This would indicate they are enjoying the physical interaction. Keep it up!

French Kiss – This is the open mouth kiss where your tongues become fully involved. This is a definite sign that the person is feeling passionate and uninhibited in their physical relationship with you.

Traveling Kiss – This is when the kiss begins traveling away from the mouth to other parts of the face and neck and beyond. These kisses are intended to arouse you and lead to much more than kissing. If you weren’t planning to have sex with your date, you shouldn’t let this continue.

Hesitant Kiss – A hesitant kiss may mean that the person is simply shy about physical interaction or it may be they are uncertain of your response. Either way, your response to this kiss will be the determining factor to whether or not the kiss is continued or repeated.

happycouplekissingCrushing Kiss – If they seem to crush their face against yours in a way that is more painful than pleasant. This means they have no idea what they’re doing. Do your best to be kind, but let them know that they could decrease the intensity a bit.

Hopefully these definitions will help you out during the next date, when you’re trying to decipher the meaning of that kiss you just got.

  1. I don’t know about anyone else ,but I sometimes kiss with my eyes open because I love to vulnerability kinda like when you waking up from a nap on your boyfriend lap and the first thing you see is him staring at you with this look in his eye …well that how I feel about kissing with my eyes open it gives me butterflies and the jitters, therefore if I kiss you with my eyes open it should show you how infatuated I am with you . I guess.

  2. After many years of participation, observation and consideration ( I am old ) – I am convinced that Larry James is, oddly enough, exactly right. Most notably with regard to ‘eyes open’, where this strongly indicates a shallow involvement – perhaps due to distraction or previous emotional pain. These people shall be chums and friends to one, at most.

  3. I always cringe at broad brush stroke statements like the open eyes thing. Popped into my head and was looking it up for a laugh. a girl I was seeing a few years ago said it to me, I did it occasionally without really thinking, but she never gave details. I was fairly shy and she was way too good for me but also turns out I have a minor borderline personality also. Just don’t like idea of some poor nervous person getting an unnecessary complex on top of something like that coz some website recommends the heave ho because they not 110% in for unknown reason, can’t all be hyper normative ‘alpha’. People have quirks and usually they mean nothing much, and I was into her like you wouldn’t believe!!

  5. I kiss with my eyes open. What it mean by “they are a spectator rather than a participant.”

    • It means you are more into observing what is going on rather than the kiss itself. 😉 Kissing is more fun with your eye’s closed. While kissing, close your eyes and let your imagination take you wherever you want to go.

      • Dear Larry, if I am kissing my partner I keep my eyes open, I want to be there with him, at that moment and in that place. I don’t understand why “closing my eyes and allowing my imagination to take me somewhere else” is considered better or more healthy. Would it be considered healthier behaviour if one partner wanted the light off rather than on ? Aren’t people who insist on only making love in the dark considered a little strange ? How is that different ?
In an intimate moment isn’t it better to use all of ones senses in order to engage fully ?
The view could be argued that those who habitually close their eyes during love kissing have a fear of intimacy so are blocking out a lot of the experience, or that subconsciously they do not find their partner attractive enough and are blocking the sight of them, and so on, and so forth. Perhaps giving people the advice to “Not bother” with an eyes open kisser is a little too broad in scope to be helpful or even sensible. We should not ascribe exactly the same motivation to all people for what amounts to personal taste/habit, especially in subjects as convoluted as human sensuality. There may be other reasons besides being emotionally stunted.

        • I so agree with you! I love kissing with my eyes open, I feel more connected to the person and when I see their eyes it makes the kiss more intense! 😍

  15. Hmm! I hadn’t thought about definitions of kisses ever in my life but it looks like french kisses and especially travelling kisses are not the best idea right now.
