Guy Finley’s “Key Lessons”

The Wisdom and Wit of Guy Finley. . .

The reward of being True to ourselves becomes more and more apparent as we realize that most of the fears that stalk us are created by us when we are false to others, or to ourselves; too late we discover that to compromise our own integrity is the same as forsaking our wish to be fearless and free.

To measure flour for a pie crust causes no pain, but measure your baking skills against those of your friends — while you are mixing the pie’s ingredients — and all you succeed at doing is making yourself miserable. Comparing ourselves to anyone or anything is, by law, a recipe for pain!

Mediocrity is a form of madness, a dream embraced by the masses because it makes just getting by an acceptable — sometimes applauded — social art form. What is excellent requires extra effort. To agree to sleep our way through life is to lose everything, because it rules out the possibility of our soul ever being stirred into its awakening.

There are times when the greatest act of kindness we can express towards another human being is to swallow our own sadness, or to refuse to make that sarcastic or impatient remark. Acts of kindness such as these cost us ourselves, and when we agree to pay this price it is a better, brighter world that we buy back.

Every moment that unfolds in life presents us with an invitation to choose either the path of what will better us — as when we choose conscious kindness over unthinking cruelty — or a path that will make us more bitter — as when we unconsciously embrace a resentment instead of working to release it. To be Wise is to choose in favor of the Better Path, even though the bitter one often seems easier.

When nothing seems to be going right, make your world a brighter place by remembering this simple truth: Whatever we resist, persists — so the wise action to take toward any unwanted moment begins with welcoming what challenges us about it. To reach for this new understanding is the same as enjoying its powers, including the ease with which you can then go on to make whatever changes are still seen as being needful of your touch.
